If you’re a machine gun enthusiast, you’ve probably heard that brass catchers don’t work on belt-feds — or tried one that didn’t. That reputation belongs to old legacy designs, not to what’s available now. But if you’ve ever run an M249 or M240 through a full belt at the range, you already know the problem firsthand — brass and links everywhere.
For years, the standard response to this problem was to accept it. Send the junior guys out afterward with bags in sweltering heat or freezing cold, or for private owners, just leave the valuable brass wherever it may have landed. We’ve even heard stories of bedsheets spread out across ranges in an effort to bundle and haul out in record time – a crafty solution that gives a true sense of the definite need for a good solution.
Here at KET, we had a hard time believing that a good design couldn’t beat out sheets on the range. Through the process of sitting with end users and watching how they actually used these firearms in training and security related environments, we learned that for the belt-feds specifically, the wrong design can create more problems than it solves…
What Went Wrong With Earlier Designs
The first generation of machine gun brass catchers approached the problem completely wrong. Metal frames, rigid construction, closed cavity designs that attached to the weapon and surrounded the ejection port. On paper, these concepts made sense. In the field, the problems were immediate.
All-metal construction instantly led to extremely loud conditions — a noise signature that has no place in a training environment and even less in an operational one. These rigid frames didn’t conform to different weapon configurations, mounting setups, or field environments. Additionally, permanent attachment methods and closed cavity designs physically blocked access to the working parts of the weapon in the critical case of a platform jam that needs instant access and attention.
These sub-par solutions causing serious risks to range operations, trainers and shooters didn’t have much choice but to go back to painstakingly searching for and picking up individual shells, one-by-one. As a result the category developed a reputation for not working, end of story.
Machine Gun Brass Catchers That Actually Work
The design requirements for an M249/M240 brass catcher aren’t complicated, but they’re non-negotiable:
Soft-shell construction. A soft-shell design built from 1000D Cordura is lighter than metal, doesn’t rattle, and is malleable enough to conform to different weapon configurations and environments. It absorbs rather than amplifies the movement and vibration of sustained fire. For a platform that can run 850 rounds per minute, that matters.
Quick attach and release via easy-to-access mount points. The machine gun mounts are already there — a well-designed brass catcher uses them via quick detach pins, requiring no tools and no permanent modification to the weapon. Attachment and detachment should take seconds, not minutes, and should leave zero trace on the weapon when removed.
Open design with immediate working parts access. The catcher should never physically block access to the feed tray, bolt, or chamber. If a jam occurs during a range exercise, a shooter needs to get a hand in there immediately — not after unclipping, unstrapping, or removing anything. The right design allows full hand access to clear any stoppage without touching the catcher at all.
High capacity. A 200-round belt produces a significant volume of brass and links. A brass catcher that fills up mid-belt defeats the purpose. The right design handles 400+ rounds with ease — enough to empty after every other barrel change.
Quick dump mechanism. When it is time to empty, the process should be immediate. A zippered dump panel at the bottom of the catcher lets you release spent casings and links directly into a carry bag for sorting and recycling — without detaching the catcher from the weapon, and without brass going everywhere in the process.
Why Your Unit or Range Probably Doesn't Have One Yet
Machine gun brass catchers purpose-built for the M249, M240, and MINIMI are a relatively new product category. The consumer market has had rifle and handgun brass catchers for years — but solutions designed specifically for the volume, velocity, and mounting requirements of belt-fed platforms have been limited, poorly designed, or simply unknown to most units.
Most range officers haven’t acquired one because of those earlier designs that left a bad impression and nobody went looking again. The assumption that “brass catchers don’t really work on belt-feds” became an accepted fact — not because it’s true, but because the first generation of products earned that reputation.

It’s worth being direct about the regulatory side of this. AR 700-28 requires that every round fired be accounted for — as expended, as live ammunition turned in, or as brass residue. Unaccounted residue triggers a DA Form 5811 requiring sign-off from a lieutenant colonel or civilian equivalent.
A brass catcher doesn’t eliminate the accountability requirement, but it does make compliance dramatically easier and more accurate. Post-fire accountability becomes a quick zip and a count rather than endless sweeping and a triple count.
For high-tempo training environments where range time is compressed and turnover matters, this simple tool can be the difference between a 8 or 12 hour range day.
What to Ask Before You Buy
If you’re evaluating a brass catcher for the M240 or M249 — whether you’re a unit armorer, a range officer, or a civilian owner — the questions that matter are:
- Does it connect to existing mount points without permanent modification?
- Can you access the feed tray and bolt immediately without removing it?
- What is the rated holding capacity, including links as well as brass?
- How does it dump — and can you do it without detaching from the weapon?
- What is it made of, and will it hold up to sustained fire and field conditions?
If a brass catcher can’t give you a clean answer on all five, it’s the wrong tool to rely on.
